Prior to Spring 2020, our multi-age groups (grades K - 7) meet regularly with a teacher leader who facilitated collaborative programming aimed at supporting a team, school spirit, and social (local, national, global) awareness. The activities focused on team building, collaboration, school spirit, kindness, social awareness, or citizenship.

At Carson school, we believe in the importance of assisting our students to become caring, compassionate, and contributing members of society. Our Family Group program focuses on the development of working in a team effectively and cooperatively, and to supporting a respectful, kind mindset towards our society and environment. We hope to continue this important work once COVID-19 Health & Safety restrictions are lifted.

The Core Competencies are the intellectual, personal, and social skills that all students need to develop for success in life beyond school. B.C. has identified three Core Competencies as essential for all learners:
Communication |
Today we live in a state of constant change. It is a technology-rich world, where communication is instant and information is immediately accessible. The way we interact with each other personally, socially, and at work has changed forever. Knowledge is growing and information is changing extremely quickly, creating new possibilities. This is the world our students are entering.
British Columbia’s curriculum is being modernized to respond to this demanding world. To develop new models, the Ministry consulted with education experts both locally and internationally. They agree that to prepare students for the future, the curriculum must be student-centred and flexible, and maintain a focus on literacy and math skills, while supporting deeper learning. |
Carson Elementary School is located on the traditional land of the Southern Carrier First Nation. We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to work and learn on their traditional territory.
One of our goals in our School Plan for Student Success is to imbed the First Peoples Principles of Learning into daily lessons. We have a part-time Indigenous Education Support (IES), Tammy Watson, who is committed to supporting our students' success in school. Some of our programs include a Culture Group, annual Family Gatherings, Truth and Reconciliation teachings, Orange Shirt Day Education, and inclusion of First Peoples Principles of Learning in our classrooms and assemblies. In 2019, staff and students participated in the Blanket Exercise, which explores the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Blankets arranged on the floor represent land and participants are invited to step into the roles of First Nations, Inuit, and later, Métis peoples. |
